Hiker rescued at Cardigan Mountain, dies later at DHMC

ORANGE — A 62-year old man who was rescued after suffering a medical incident while hiking on Cardigan Mountain on Sunday died at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center the following day, the Canaan Fire Department said on Thursday.
Canaan FD said that Mascoma Valley emergency responders were alerted at 10:17 a.m. on Sunday that a hiker on the West Ridge Trail in Orange had fallen and was experiencing difficulty breathing. The hiker was located about a quarter mile from the trailhead where trained bystanders were performing CPR when rescue personnel arrived at the scene, according to the news release.
Emergency responders initiated advanced life support procedures at the scene and carried the hiker in a rescue basket to a waiting ambulance in which he was transported to DHMC in critical condition. The man died at DHMC on Monday, Canaan FD said.
Rescue personnel from Canaan FD, Canaan EMS, Enfield Fire Department, Enfield FAST Squad Grafton Fire Department, Lebanon Fore Department, Rumney Fire Department and NH Fish and Game assisted in the response, Canaan FD said.
