Town Meeting preview: Hefty Cornish road maintenance expenses up for vote

Article of note: Voters will be asked to approve a hefty infrastructure sum: $700,000 for the maintenance of highways and bridges, as well as snow removal from town and school grounds. Additionally, the town is seeking approval to withdraw $200,000 from the already existing Highway Heavy Equipment Capital Reserve Fund for the purchase of a new dump truck.

Contested races: Two Board of Selectmen seats are contested. One is for a single-year position, and the other is for a three-year term. Additionally, the two-year supervisor of the checklist seat is contested.

Budgets and spending articles: Voters will be asked to approve a total operating budget of $1.3 million in appropriations, and $483,000 in proposed special articles, such as a $35,000 addition to the Fire Department Capital Reserve Fund. $820,000 will be raised in taxes.

When, where and how to vote: Voting by official ballot and checklist will take place in the Cornish Elementary School gymnasium on Tuesday, March 8, from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Articles 1 and 2 of the warrant will be acted on at 10:00 a.m., and Articles 3 through 24 will be acted upon when the business portion of Town Meeting begins at 12:00 p.m.
