Forum for July 18, 2024: Attack on Trump

This is a sad day for America. Why would anyone want to shoot Trump? Is it because the people have been sold so many lies they cannot distinguish a lie from truth?
Democrats have no real message so they attack Trump. They continue to incite violence by calling him a king, fascist, Nazi, dictator, insurrectionist, he will destroy our democracy. As Biden stated “It’s time to put Trump in the bullseye.” Really? This creates hysteria and Biden is doing exactly what he is accusing Trump of doing on Jan. 6.
Democrats should run on their own issues like; allowing transgendering of kids, teaching sex ed to Kindergarten, allowing obscene material in our schools, woke confusing teachings instead of teaching on improving scores in reading, math and science (50% or more of our kids are failing at grade level), limiting parental rights, allowing millions of illegal aliens to cross our border without paperwork, support sanctuary cities because of all the illegal aliens they let enter, giving illegal aliens driver’s licensing which then may be used to vote (you must be a citizen to vote), wanting men to play on women’s sports, forgiving student loans, bigger government, killing innocent babies by allowing abortions up until birth (six months is not enough?), and I’m sure I missed a few.
What has happened to the Democratic party? Democrats need to run on their issues and stop selling fears, what ifs, and half-truths or lies.
We are lacking in morals, integrity and character building. We should be learning from the Pilgrims and our forefathers, the creators of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitutions, how they relied on God.

The look back to the days of scything (“Masters of the Craft”; July 1) brought to mind two things.
First, it was only a month ago that our 24-year-old grandson living in Maine asked for and received one of the family scythes. I had given him the basics of swinging and whet stone use years ago (including “leave the dog inside”), and now he is ready to put it to use.
Second, I was reminded of my discovery in the barn when we retired to Unity years ago. Spooned together on a beam were three slender grass scythe blades retired after lifetimes of use. Our farmhouse dates to 1790, and I suspect there are more farmer lives than blade lives represented. More than sentiment is involved as blades were tucked away. Who knows when a bit of tempered steel will be needed?

Gun control campaign launch delayed
Due to recent flood damage in Barre, the Sunday, July 21, event at Barre’s Old Labor Hall, launching Gun Sense VT’s “Campaign to Ban Assault Weapons,” has been postponed. A new date and time will be announced later.
That said, the assassination attempt of former President Trump with an AR-15 underscores the need for banning these weapons of war, the number one firearm of mass shooters.
