Girls Hockey

La Salle Academy 2

Key players: La Salle Academy — Ava Zoppo (23 saves); Hanover — Julia Lawe (one goal), Eleanor Edson (15 saves), Hannah Gardner

Highlights: During the Hanover Holiday Tournament championship on Saturday, La Salle Academy struck first with two first-period goals. Hanover shifted the momentum by outshooting the team from Providence, R.I., 11-5 in the second. The Bears couldn’t solve netminder Zoppo (23 saves) until 1:35 remaioned in the game and Hanover’s goalie pulled. Lawe scored off a Katharine Moseley pass to prevent the shutout. A La Salle penalty made things more interesting for the final minute as Hanover applied pressure with a six-on-four advantage, but the visitors held on for the victory.

Coach’s quote: “This was a fitting final between two pretty skilled and determined teams. I was pleased with our compete level and the composure we played with late in the game.” — Hanover’s John Dodds

Hanover 6, Essex 1

Key players: Hanover — Katharine Moseley (two goals), Emma Richardson and Nora Bradley (one goal each), Rachel Rockmore and Pauline Rudd (one goal, one assist each), Hannah Gardner and Lucy Braga (two assists each), Faith Lindsay and Maggie Feng (one assist each). Eleanor Edson and JJ Masland shared goaltending duties for Hanover.

Highlights: Hanover scored two in first, Trinity responded with two in the second and then the Bears scored two in third to close out the victory. Hanover fired 49 shots at Trinity’s goalie.

Highlights: Bow netted the game-winning goal during a three-on-three overtime to nip the Bears in the opening round of the Brian C. Stone Tournament, a result that goes down as a tie for Hanover. In a game of momentum turns, Hanover scored three straight after falling behind 1-0. Bow responded with three of their own to go up 4-3. Wilson tied it in third to force OT. Morancy played well in net for Hanover.

Coach’s quote: “We played well in offensive zone but struggled in defensive zone. Our execution was lacking. Bobbling pucks, bad passes, unforced errors all caused us to play way too much in our end. We need to clean up our breakout and off puck defensive play.” — Hanover’s Dick Dodds
