Moreno sets Vermont D-II record in 1,600 meters

BURLINGTON — Hartford High’s Bennett Moreno set another VPA Division II state record and the Thetford boys indoor track team edged Hartford for fourth place among 30 teams at last Saturday’s Vermont Track and Field Officials Association meet at the University of Vermont.

Moreno, a senior, set the record in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 28 seconds.

The Thetford boys, who scored 73 points, six points ahead of Hartford, were led again by Uly Junker and Brady Sloop. Junker won the 55-meter dash (6.62), took second in the 300 run and second in the long jump behind the winning leap of Hartford’s Ayodele Lowe (6.52 meters). Sloop won the 1,000 (2:45) and was second in the 1,600. Hartford’s Lowe won the high jump (1.85), with Oxbow’s Rueben Keefe third. White River Valley’s Ellis Bogardus was second in the shot put, and teammate Jack Hughes placed third and was fourth in the long jump. Thetford’s Luke Miller was third in the 600. Thetford’s Luke Miller, Daniel Mann, Liam Murphy and Brady Sloop won the 4x400 relay (3:55) Hartford’s 4x800 boys relay team of Hugh Wendling, Elliott Brooks, Scott McSherry and Moreno finished second.

For the Thetford girls, who were eighth among 29 teams, Ava Hayden was second in the 1,600 and fifth in the 600. Teammate Maya Dixon won the 55 hurdles (10 seconds), and Imari Taylor of White River Valley was second in the shot put. Oxbow’s Casey Wiedrick finished third in the 3,200, with Thetford’s Madeline Piecuch fourth. Hartford’s 4x400 relay team of Dakota Smith, Kathryn Summarsell, Geneva Durgin and Scarlett Brooks was third.
