CLAREMONT — One resident of Marion Phillips apartments suffered non-life threatening injuries in a Wednesday evening fire at the 96-unit affordable housing complex.

Golden Cross Ambulance transported the injured resident of the apartments located at 243 Broad Street to Valley Regional Hospital, according to a news release Claremont Fire Chief James Chamberlain posted to social media at about midnight Thursday.

The department responded to the call for the fire at about 6 p.m. Wednesday. The building’s sprinkler system contained the blaze to apartment 405, which sustained significant damage.

“That occupant will be displaced for a bit,” said Claremont Fire Lt. Kyle Lizotte in a Thursday phone interview.

Several other apartments sustained water damage due to the sprinkler activation, the news release said. However, the news release said, the damage “should not diminish the importance of the sprinkler system’s role in controlling the fire and holding it to the room of origin.”

It look about an hour and a half for the eight responding firefighters to get the fire under control, said Lizotte. The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of Thursday morning, he said.

Lizotte did not know any more information about the occupant who was injured, how many residents were displaced or how long it will be until they can return to their homes.

“On-site staff have made arrangements for impacted tenants,” the news release said.
