Local roundup: Gilman gives Thetford boys OT win

THETFORD — After 80 minutes of goalless soccer, the Thetford Academy boys wasted no time putting an end to things, with Jacob Gilman delivering the Panthers a 1-0 victory over visiting Lake Region in the first minute of overtime.

Dempsey McGovern got the ball to Gilman behind the defenders, and Gilman beat the goalkeeper with his left foot for his 14th goal of the year.

Thetford (6-5-2) won its third straight and will finish the regular season at home against Harwood on Saturday.

White River Valley 5, West Rutland 1

SOUTH ROYALTON — The Wildcats (8-4-1) ran their win streak to six with the victory over the Golden Horde (3-10-0) on Senior Day.

White River Valley's five goals came from five different players — Robby McShinsky, Teddy Janzcak, Brayden Russ, Finn Bailey and Sawyer Morrill. McShinsky, Cory Darling-Salls and Ty Couture each had an assist.

The Wildcats honored seniors McShinsky, Janzcak, Zach Armstrong, Dieter Sieling and Colin Laframboise in their final regular-season home game.

WRV concludes the regular season Friday at Otter Valley.

Rivendell 7, Bellows Falls 0

ORFORD — The Raptors (11-1-0) rolled over the hapless Terriers (0-13) for their 11th win in a row.

Josiah Welch and Jacoby Patterson each scored twice for Rivendell, and Derek Vogelian, Ben Hook and Carter Bacon also tallied. Vogelian and Harry Molesworth had one assist apiece as the Raptors out-shot Bellows Falls, 25-6.

"Tonight was a real team effort, working to help each other score," Rivendell coach Kevin Brooker said. "Overall a great tuneup for the playoffs."

The Raptors are at Oxbow on Saturday.

Proctor 2, Sharon 0

SHARON — The Phoenix (1-12-0) concluded the regular season with a loss to the Phantoms.

Sharon had its chances to score, notably a first-half shot from Zabrien McGee that went just wide of the post. Maple Moore made several key interceptions that stopped Proctor's momentum.

Richford 2, Oxbow 1

BRADFORD — The Olympians (2-11-0) suffered their eighth straight defeat, falling to the Falcons (5-6). Oxbow ends the regular season at home against Rivendell on Saturday.

GIRLS SOCCERMascoma 3, Berlin 2

BERLIN, N.H. — After winning their first game of the season and second in program history on Monday, the Royals (2-12-0) did it again Wednesday against the Mountaineers (5-10). Emily Seiler, Jenny Lutz and Kayli Stapelfeld all tallied for Mascoma.

The Royals are back in action Thursday for their final home game against Belmont.

Stratton Mountain 5, Windsor 1

STRATTON MOUNTAIN, Vt. — The Yellowjackets (10-3-0) scored first in the 16th minute when Olivia MacLeay's corner kick led to a goal by Kenzie Wescott, but the Bears (7-4) evened the score by halftime and exploded after the break to snap Windsor's nine-game winning streak.

It was the Jacks' first defeat since Sept. 8 against Woodstock.

Skylar Koeppe and Breyer Rogan each scored twice for Stratton Mountain. Windsor goalkeeper Sophia Rockwood made 10 saves.

"We gave it a great effort tonight, but just didn't have what it took to beat a quality opponent like Stratton," Yellowjackets coach Jeff Bachey said.

Windsor is at Leland & Gray in the regular-season finale Friday.

Green Mountain 2, Hartford 0

CHESTER, Vt. — Sydney Stillman stopped 10 shots, but the Hurricanes suffered their seventh shutout. Hartford finished the regular season 1-13 while the Gumbies improved to 3-6.

FIELD HOCKEYOtter Valley 7, Windsor 0

BRANDON, Vt. — The Yellowjackets fell to 6-8 with the loss to the Otters despite Sydney Perry's 18 saves. Windsor, the three-time defending VPA Division III state champions, will now await its postseason fate.

VOLLEYBALLCoe-Brown 3, Hanover 0

NORTHWOOD, N.H. — The Bears (6-7) fell in straight sets and will host Pelham in the regular-season finale on Friday.

CROSS COUNTRYMascoma edged by Fall Mountain

WEST CANAAN — Gunner Currier and Jack Buffington led the way for the Royals in the boys race, finishing in second and third place, respectively, but the Wildcats' Ben Tetu took first to help Fall Mountain squeak by Mascoma, 29-31. Newport finished a distant third with 70.

The Fall Mountain girls won their race uncontested.
