WEST CANAAN — The Mascoma High football team made it a happy homecoming against Hillsboro-Deering on Saturday with a 48-14 win in an NHIAA Division IV game that was all but over by halftime.

After fumbling the opening kickoff — the two teams combined for six fumbles on the day — the Royals took control of the contest.

“We had an outstanding performance on both offensive and defensive side of the ball, and special teams delivered,” Mascoma coach John Daley said. “Everything was clicking the way it should.”

After stopping Hillsboro-Deering’s first drive, Mascoma quickly moved the football down the field in five plays, including a 28-yard run by senior running back Neil Rugg, to set up an easy three-yard touchdown gallop by senior quarterback Brody Goulette.

After the Royals forced another punt, Goulette once again led the team down the field and finished the drive on the ground from three yards out, making it 13-0 after a missed extra point.

When Mascoma took over later on the Hillsboro-Deering 35-yard line, junior running back Paxten Roberts gained 21 yards on first down, setting up his own score two plays later, extending the lead to 20.

After a botched Hillcats punt, Goulette attacked from the air.

With pressure coming, he found junior Justin Fletcher wide open for a score making it 27-0 entering halftime.

After a long run got the visitors on the board at the outset of the second half, Mascoma would regain its lead on a fourth-down play from the Hillsboro 11.

Goulette rolled right and found wide-open junior running back Keano Gianni, returning the lead to 27 at 34-7.

Later in the half, pressure from junior defensive end Collin Meyers would force a bad pass that got intercepted by Fletcher, setting up Rugg for the seven-yard touchdown.

After a fumble on a squib kick, Mascoma would post its final score when Fletcher, now playing quarterback, snuck the football in from a yard out to give Mascoma the 48-14 lead.

On the day, Goulette completed five of seven passes for 116 yards and two touchdownsand carried the ball five times for 33 yards and two more touchdowns.

Rugg led the team with 78 yards on nine carries and a score.

“We came out pretty hard, and [the game] turned out excellent,” Goulette said after the game. “There were a few flukes and a few things that should not have happened, but overall that is football and that’s going to happen.”

Mascoma (2-1) lost its opener to Raymond, 39-12, two weeks ago before bouncing back and defeating Newfound, 34-6.

Mascoma will head on the road next Saturday to face Winnisquam before returning back to West Canaan to meet Bishop Brady on Oct. 12.
